What Is A Coffee Nap And Why Are So Many People Swearing By It?

If you are a non-morning person like I am, then you know and dread those days when you need to be up and productive before a certain time. No matter what day of the week it is, or what I have to do, I always have the best of intentions, but for some reason, I just cannot leave that snooze button alone.

I thought I was a lost cause. I thought I would always simply be that person who must set several alarms (about an hour before I actually need to get up), and just live with that fact. Or I would just have to realize that I will perpetually be late for morning appointments, and should avoid them at all costs. Well, that was before I discovered this new craze. I may be a little late to the party on this, but it is life-changing, at least for those who swear by it.

So, what exactly is a coffee nap?

As it is described by many publications, a coffee nap entails drinking some sort of caffeinated drink and immediately taking a nap for 20 minutes. The idea is simple. It usually takes about 20 minutes for caffeine to take effect, so why not utilize that time for some shut eye? You may not get to true Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, but even being half sleep is enough to have an impact. Make sure to set an alarm for 20 minutes and then wake up and do what you have to do. Some people prefer to do this upon waking up, first thing in the morning, while others prefer to do it at some point throughout the day. Either way, it seems to be working.

The most important thing is to have coffee on hand, especially if you’re trying to do this first thing in the morning. One trick some people do is set their coffee maker to a certain time so that it is ready at first light. They set an initial alarm about 25 – 30 minutes before they have to truly get up, depending on how long it takes you to get the coffee, drink it and go back to bed. When that alarm goes off, they go to the kitchen or to the place that houses their coffee drink, drink it on demand, then go immediately back to bed, but not before setting a new alarm for 20 minutes. Then, when the coffee kicks in and takes effect, the alarm goes off almost simultaneously making it easier to get up and attack the day without even touching the snooze button.

Remember, you can try this technique at any point throughout the day, with any caffeinated drink that you prefer. Everyone’s body and schedule is different.
